Silvia Papa was born Turin, in 1974. Photographer, traveler, and researcher of stories, traditions, and
visions of the world, she is specialised in Cultural Heritage Communication. In collaboration with
Universities, Institutions and Cultural Associations, she has developed visual research and digital
documentation projects. She writes and photographs for magazines and cultural projects, and
conducts seminars on photography, travel and the creative and cognitive potential of the gaze, as
well as photographic explorations, with adults and children.
She studied dance and theatre, and personally deepened topics related to the philosophical and
symbolic thought of different cultures of the world, the physiology and the psychology of art. In
2012, as part of the Doctorate programme in Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture
(Polytechnic of Turin), she worked on the thesis "Identity" and visual memory: communities, events,
documentation", where she investigates the relationship between image, identity and memory,
individual and collective.
Her artistic research develops from these transversal investigations and includes/explores different
artistic languages, while preserving the photographic nature of the material and the photographic
vocation of the creative process. In her work, dreamlike vision and reality participate in the architecture of composition as in the
configuration and constitution of meaning.
The contact and observation of nature, music and dance, as principles of unity of body / emotion /
thought / movement, are sources of creative, aesthetic and emotional inspiration, and object of
experimental researches subsequently translated into visual language: in fact, the static photographic
image possesses for her an extraordinary potential for synthesis, able to act on different levels of
reality through the gaze that focuses, comprehends, elaborates and includes.
Since 1998 she has exhibited in national and international art fairs and galleries, collaborating as
well with artists of other disciplines, and developing some video performances (Tyche I and II) and
moments of research behind closed doors. Since 1986 she has explored several continents and met
different cultures on long journeys.
